How to Plan a Safe Drone Mission
The most important part of drone operations is making sure that you are doing everything safely, and that you are ensuring the safety of your team and those around you. Good planning and awareness are the heart of making sure that you are operating safely and following all the rules.
Our team has broken down the best steps to take to ensure that every drone mission is safe.
1. Understand your Goal
Before you go out, ask yourself and your team what you are trying to accomplish. Assess what a successful mission would look like and what steps you need to take to achieve this mission safely. This will ensure that you plan your mission safely and accomplish what you have set out to do.
Questions to ask:
What am I trying to accomplish?
What is my team trying to accomplish?
What would a successful mission look like?
Knowing your goal helps you plan your flight properly and safely.
2. Check the Rules
In Canada, drone pilots must follow rules set by Transport Canada. You must choose an appropriate location, taking into account airspace, local bylaws, and restrictions. Ensure that you operate within the limits of your RPAS pilot certificate and are carrying the correct certifications and documents at all times.
Before flying:
Make sure you’re allowed to fly in that area
Follow the regulations that apply to your operation and certification level - i.e Basic, Advanced, or Level 1 Complex
If you’re unsure of something, make sure that you do not operate a drone until everything is in order and that all rules are being followed properly.
3. Look at the Weather
Weather can make or break your flight, and it’s important to check the weather before your operation.
Check for:
Temperature
Wind speeds
Precipitation
Poor visibility, fog or low cloud ceilings
If the weather isn’t good, or within your system’s limitations, it’s best to wait.
5. Complete a Pre-Flight Checklist
Before takeoff, make sure everything is working. Complete a Pre-Flight Checklist to ensure that you have everything and that everything is up to date before you start your mission.
6. Have an Emergency Plan
Think ahead in case something goes wrong. Ensure that you have an emergency plan if something goes wrong and that you and your team understand what to do if things do not go as planned.
Ask yourself:
What if I lose signal?
Where can I land safely in case of an emergency?
Having a plan helps you stay calm and react quickly.
Why Planning Matters
Planning your mission and goals before you fly is a vital part of drone operations because it makes sure that you have clear expectations and a plan, and ensures safety for those around you, yourself, and your team.
